Tarpon

There is a dive site in Xcalak called “La Poza”, or “The Pit”. This dive site is one of a kind. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. It is a fracture within the barrier reef, in the form or a half-pipe. It starts being both shallow and narrow, getting progressively wider and deeper.

Because of it’s unique topography, it is home to a very large school of large (5-7ft) tarpon (250-350 individuals). In La Poza it is also common to see large schools of dog snapper, jacks, goliath grouper, eagle rays and much more.
